About the artist
Who is Marisa? (a.k.a. Skullisa)
- I was born and raised in the sunny Bay Area California city of San Jose. I grew up with art all around me. My Mom and Grandma are artist's and they shaped who I am as an artist today. I've been drawing pretty much all my life until I started to take art more seriously as I got into college. I used to just draw for fun when I was younger and had no idea, I'd be here today running my own art business. I had to remind myself that it is completely okay to keep changing your mind about what you want to do in your life. It's never too late!
What inspires you?
- I have a ton of inspirations!! My Mom is the first one because she inspires me to keep going and to never give up on what I want to do in life (and her art is beyond amazing !). Another would be my favorite music artists such as Deftones, The Weeknd, Future, Kid Cudi, Radiohead, and The Neighbourhood. Just to name a few haha. I get inspired by lyrics very often and it pushes me to create a piece that I have envisioned in my mind and then I bring it life. Lastly, I get inspired by my friends who are also artists. Shoutout to Arsh, Sahil, Jaz, Yosnier, Immy, Amu, Kei, Harvey, Ahmed (aka Ram), Hassan, Avaaj and literally all the homies in the squad. You know who you are <3
How has your style evolved? What was the journey?
- Looking back my style has changed tremendously. I used to only be a traditional artist drawing on my notebooks with colored and graphite pencils. My style started out as very textured with not very challenging angles of people or skeletons that I would draw. I used to draw up a bunch of fan art of my favorite artists or renditions of my favorite albums. I loved the grittiness the colored pencils would create, and I adapted that to my style a lot. Then during the start of the pandemic in 2020, I purchased an iPad. This ended up changing the game for me. I was able to draw digitally for the first time and elevate my art to a whole new level. I began to establish my digital style through the drawing app, Procreate. At first it was overwhelming because it was all new to me but soon enough I became more confident drawing digitally. My style now is a play on crazy perspectives from fish-eye to strange angles. I don't like to make everything perfect because the imperfections are perfect to me.
